Moss Reports To 49ers With Roster Spot In Doubt

Sep 2, 2014 10:35 PM

Randy Moss didn't attend the first two weeks of San Francisco's offseason program, but he arrived Monday in time for the first on-field coaching session. Matt Maiocco of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reports that coach Jim Harbaugh suggested Moss spend the first two weeks at home. "It was eye opening," Moss said. "Today was the first day and we were moving so fast. Today felt like we'd been out here for a week or two." He will have to get up to speed fast. Barring injuries in front of him, Moss will have a difficult time just making the 49ers.

Eagles Believe They 'Overplayed' McCoy

Aug 4, 2014 3:17 PM

The Eagles seem prepared to back off the number of carries given to LeSean McCoy this coming season. "I probably overplayed (LeSean) McCoy a little bit, even though he doesn't want to hear that. As he continues to get older and have the number of reps under his belt that he does, you'll want to back off the number of reps that he does," Reid said over the weekend. McCoy started 15 games for the Eagles and carried the ball 273 times for 1,309 yards and a league-best 17 touchdowns in 2011. He also caught 48 passes for three touchdowns and 315 yards.

Jets Had Eye On Bruce Irvin, Who Seattle Took One Pick Before

Oct 31, 2014 4:48 AM

The Jets had interest in Bruce Irvin, who the Seahawks drafted with the 15th overall selection, one pick ahead of New York. Many analysts felt Seattle reached on the West Virginia defender. After the Seahawks took Irvin, they received a good-natured call from the Jets cursing them out for taking the player they wanted. One general manager called Irvin the "hottest player in the draft."

Wilson Is Highest-Drafted QB By Seattle Since 1993

Oct 31, 2014 6:46 AM

The Seahawks drafted Russell Wilson with the 75th overall pick in last week's NFL Draft, the highest they have taken a quarterback since Rick Mirer went second overall in 1993. A two-sport athlete at North Carolina State, Wilson was drafted by the Rockies in 2010. The following fall, he returned to North Carolina State where he was a junior captain in football. He passed for 3,563 yards and 28 touchdowns, but the following spring decided he would give a full season to baseball, reporting for spring training. North Carolina State released him from scholarship in April, but by the summer, Wilson had decided he would come back to play football. "I realized that football is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life," Wilson said. "I experimented with the baseball thing. I knew that there's nothing better than getting ready for a football game, and playing in front of national audience."

Titans Moving Away From Run-First Offense?

Oct 8, 2014 9:35 AM

The Titans selected wide receiver Kendall Wright with their first pick last week, perhaps suggesting that the team will feature the pass more in 2012. Chris Johnson had a disappointing 2011 season after setting the league on fire the previous year. Tennessee is now a team that wants to throw the football. "I think [Wright] reminds me of Drew Hill and Ernest Givins that we had back in the run-and-shoot days in Houston," offensive coordinator Chris Palmer said. "He's a guy that also can play outside. He closes the cushion between himself and the defensive back very, very quickly. "I think he's a guy that will allow us to move him around and complement our other receivers and give us a chance to be more explosive offensively."

Patriots Draft Rugby Player For Special Teams

Oct 31, 2014 1:11 PM

Bill Belichick is known for some unconventional draft selections, but even he opened eyes by taking former rugby player Nate Ebner. Ebner, a special teams standout at Ohio State, in the sixth round (197 overall) Saturday, despite the fact that he has played just three snaps on defense. "We think he has a lot of good football in front of him," Belichick said. "Of course, we had good connections at Ohio State. Obviously, that played a part in it." In 2009, the 6-foot, 205-pound Ebner walked on to the Ohio State football team, playing primarily on special teams although he was listed as a safety. "I enjoy running down as fast as you can," Ebner said of special teams. "It's exciting. ... It's just one big blur, then it's over. I don't know, maybe I've got a screw loose."

Holmgren Insists Browns Weren't Duped By Vikings In Trade

Oct 26, 2014 4:34 AM

It has been reported that the Vikings were bluffing about multiple teams being interested in the third overall pick. Mike Holmgren is aware of the reports, but doesn't buy into them a few days after the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Cleveland wanted to get Trent Richardson, so they traded up to the third pick to ensure they wouldn't lose him to another team. "Contrary to what was written and said yesterday, we had to compete," Holmgren said. "We weren't the Lone Ranger in that deal.' ... You don't want to be up there, really, but we were up there so it was very, very important who we chose there. That's why we targeted Trent. We didn't want to lose him."

Colts Expect To Sign Luck 'Swiftly'

Sep 6, 2014 7:42 PM

The Colts expect to sign first overall pick Andrew Luck to a contract sooner rather than later. "It's something that should be done swiftly," owner Jim Irsay said. "There shouldn't be a difficult process with that." Indianapolis is expected to ink top pick Luck to a four-year, $22 million contract. "The sooner the better on all the draft picks," Irsay said. "We're going to present all the picks (offers) and say, 'Here is the deal. Period.'"
